See How LED Screens were Used to Create Backgrounds on The Mandalorian

When Disney+ came out last year, it seems everyone was talking about Baby Yoda and the new Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The hit series was a huge success, and people are excitedly waiting the second season. It turns out the streaming TV series was created using a pretty revolutionary method that could change how TV and films are made going forward.

When filming The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau and his team used LED video walls surrounding the stage set to create much of the backgrounds that actually made it into the series. Using LED screens, the designers and filmmakers were able to create and change backgrounds on the fly. It also helps the actors, because instead of being in front of a green screen, they can react in real time to things happening around them, and it makes the acting feel more natural and accurate. The LED tiles also were used to help light the stage and actors, and could be adjusted easily.

This is a totally game-changing method of filming that is now possible because of the improving technology. More than half of the scenes in The Mandalorian were filmed in front of these LED displays. There is a huge team behind the jumbotron screens that were able to set up and change the graphics in real time to create the perfect virtual set for filming. They are able to create any design as the background, also eliminating the need for many location shoots. This is only the beginning, and this technology and filming method will only improve from here, and will likely become much more common.
