Latency- Matching Sound and Video on Jumbotron
A while ago we got some new video gear. Once it was installed it worked great, butwhen we began doing live video with audio on the new equipment, we noticed our video was just a few milliseconds behind the audio. Whenever video gear requires processing of the video signal, it can cause latency. Some latency is to be expected, it is just a matter of how much is acceptable.
After we did an event with the new gear, we quickly learned we had just a little too much latency for our standards, and that it was distracting. Lip movement was noticeably off from the audio coming out of the event’s PA system. So we quickly invested in some more new equipment that was known to have minimal latency, and that solved the issue right away.
When latency is too significant, it can quickly make the video unwatchable. This is why we knew we had to bite the bullet and spend the extra money to get better equipment to improve our shows. This is just one example of how we never take short cuts in order to provide the best service for our customers.
