New Video Technology at the National Association of Broadcasting

Fire Up Video Travels to NAB to Find New Video Technology

National Association of Broadcastin Las VegasAt Fire Up Video, we are always working hard to make sure you have the latest and best equipment to shoot and play your video.

We just got back from the NAB (National Association of Broadcasting) event in Las Vegas. This is well known in the video industry as the go-to event held yearly in Vegas. It is so large it is almost overwhelming. But we did learn a few things about the newest in audio and video technology.

Look overhead and you might see a drone with a video camera. This year’s show had many displays of these flying machines. They come in all forms and sizes. Fire Up Video has been considering one for crowd shots of the folks at the concerts we do. We think it would be fun for the fans to interact with the camera hovering overhead and for everyone to see them on the big screen.

4K Video is the new shiny toy in the world of video. Every manufacturer is talking about their offering in this space. However, do not look for this on the Jumbotron. It would cost too much and you would not notice the difference once you were more that a few feet away. And we all know the big screen is not for those who are only a few feet away. Therefore, to pass the savings on to our customers, we will not be spending our money on something that honestly does nothing to improve the quality of our big screens.

Canon xa25 Camera Video equipmentSmall is big. It seems like everyone is making their equipment smaller and smaller and it keeps getting better and better. We found a new Canon camera called the xa25 that is tiny, but with big results. We may invest in three of these for our three-camera set ups at live shows. These come with an SDI bnc connection for our video-out that is really nice to have and unheard of on a camera this size.

We also found a video switcher that may work well in our new mobile LED DragonFly screen. It is the ATEM Television Studio from Blackmagic.  It is a simple yet powerful box that will give us control of all of our video devices in our control room.

That is the problem with these shows. The travel is the cheap part.  The gear you end up purchasing tends to put this show over budget every year. Oh well, it’s all worth it in the end.
