The larger geographical area of the Twin Cities is made up of 182 cities and townships, built around the Minnesota, Mississippi, and St. Croix Rivers. It is also part of the larger US Census division Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI, which is composed of 11 Minnesota counties, and two Wisconsin counties. Although the two cities area often thought of as one, they are two separate cities with independent municipalities, defined borders, and many other distinct differences. Minneapolis, with the highest population, is more densely populated urban area with things closer together, and more businesses and retail space.
